Caravaggio and Religion

Secrets of Caravaggio

Caravaggio's artistic works received extraordinary acclaim even during his own lifetime but the man himself was also enigmatic, rebellious and even somewhat dangerous.
At the time, his paintings were highly praised throughout Italy, and particularly in Rome where several works were on permanent display, but Caravaggio was not capable of handling this fame and his difficult personality actually held back any true, long-lasting appreciation of his talent. It wasn't until the 20th century that his works and his genius were to again receive the recognition that they deserved.
On our Caravaggio walking tour we will see several of his greatest paintings housed in little-known churches which, were it not for these paintings, wouldn't be considered of any major importance. The tour also includes visits to some of the most spectacular and yet off-the-beaten-path churches with stories and historical anecdotes to help you understand the important role of the Popes and the Church in the development of the visual arts and architecture as well as of music and literature throughout history.
