Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples

Back in 79 A.C., as described to us by Plinius, a sudden and extremely violent volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, just above the Gulf of Naples, devastated two major cities, covering the buildings and the inhabitants with deadly toxic ash and lava.

The cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum strike as frozen in time.

On our one day excursion we will visit the archaeological sites of the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum where the life and peoples of that long ago culture seem to be literally frozen in time. After our visits to these intriguing locations, you'll be ready to taste the original Neapolitan pizza (traditional thick crust and lots of oozing fresh mozzarella cheese) followed by a guided visit at the National Museum of Naples to see, among other breathtaking treasures, the many almost fully-intact items and examples of everyday life excavated from under the lava ash at Pompeii and Herculaneum. A brief walking tour of Naples (with plenty of chance to check out the hand-made cameo shops) will bring us to the picturesque Naples harbour where we will toast the end of our wonderful day with a glass of the original Limoncello liquor.
