… that is the question. Tipping in Italy can be a hot subject. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg got lynched by media for not tipping the waiter after a lunch in Rome. But did he really do anything wrong?

There are no particular “tipping rules” in Italy and in most cases you do not have to tip. Some restaurants add so called “Servizio” to the bill, usually one euro per person. If this appears on your bill, the service is included and you normally don’t leave any extra money. Italians are not famous for being big tippers but it is always a nice gesture to round up the bill with a few euros. Forget about percentages! Waiters are usually not well paid and therefore are all contributions welcome.

Tipping or not

In coffee bars it is common to leave a coin on the bar counter. Since an espresso normally costs a euro you should not leave more than max 50 cents but it is not obliged. Taxi driver appreciate if you round up the check. If the ride is 11.5 € and you give 12€, don’t ask for the change.. You are not obligated to tip your tour guide. If you like the tour and think the guide did a good job it is welcome to give something extra. The amount depends on private or group tour.

Remember! In Italy you are by law responsible for keeping the receipt. The police can stop you and ask you to show it and if you don’t have the receipts they can fine you. Don’t save it for every, you are off the hook when you are 100 meter from the sales place.

  1. I really loved that you shared this information. I am planning on going on an Italian Excursion and I was not entirely sure if I was obligated to tip my tour guide or not. I really like how you explained that if you do not keep the receipt police officers in Italy can fine you. This was very good to know. When my father was in Italy, he always would say the law enforcement over there was very strict, so it does not surprise me. Thanks for sharing. I will keep all these tips in mind when I go on my Italian excursion.
