LivTalks presents An Afternoon in an Ancient Roman Bathhouse with Rachel in Rome where you will spend a virtual afternoon discovering what it was like in Ancient Roman bathhouses. This 45 minute webinar will give you an overview of urban life in Ancient Rome and how society was generally divided into two social classes: those seeking money from patrons and the patrons giving money to their “followers”.

Rachel will take you through a typical day from an early morning rise with the sun, a daily task of errand running, a light lunch and then the activity everyone looked forward to – an afternoon at the baths. This is where social class divisions were often blurred more than in other aspects of life. Men and women would bathe together and even certain emperors would bathe with their citizens.

Learn what “Salus per Aquam” means (health through water) and why it became a mantra of society. Rachel will also give you context as to how other societies bathed without the culture of the communal baths, with many bathing just a few times a year.

Get an idea of what a typical visit to the baths would have looked like and which of these concepts has trickled over into our present day spa.
