LivTalks presents Art Wars, Baroque Rivalry Between Bernini & Borromini with Giulia live from his home in Rome! This 45-minute webinar will focus on the rivalry between two great Baroque artists Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini who were opposite in character, personality, artistic style and tastes, yet somehow both created some of the most prestigious sculptures of Roman Baroque style.

Giulia will take you on a journey of the personality of the two men starting with tales of Bernini, the son of Pietro Bernini, a Florentine successful sculptor, born in Naples. She will talk about his early days accompanying his father to the construction site of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome and how he learned to sculpt by playing with his tools. She will also talk about his eventual meeting with Paul V Borghese and Maffeo Barberini, the future pope, a meeting that will change his life forever.

Giulia will give you some background on Borromini, the son of a stonemason, born at Bissone, on Lake Lugano, a very small town with nothing else than the lake itself. In 1609, when he was a mere ten years old, he was sent by his father to Milan to work by the late-GOTH Duomo. Once in Rome, Borromini began his career as a decorative sculptor at San Pietro and assistant of Carlo Maderno.

Learn about the character of each of these two men both in art and private life and their tempers! Hear stories of Bernini who was known to have slashed his lover’s face and Borromini who destroyed the Chapel of the Three Kings built by Bernini out of spite. Learn about their competitive nature to win the bids of Roman urban projects and who of the two would win these public bids.
