Your guide will give you a bit of background about the square and its maritime history. A quick glance over your shoulder, and you will soon see the landmark you have been waiting to visit – St Mark’s Basilica. On this night tour, you will truly understand why Saint Mark’s Basilica is traditionally called “the Golden Church” from both the outside and the inside.

Your tour guide will escort you into the side entrance, reserved exclusively for LivItaly privileged passes at night. There will be no waiting on line as the basilica is closed at night and is open only to a select few groups. As you enter, do not be surprised as to how dark the basilica is inside. Make your way over to the pews, sit down and enjoy an incredible light display by the night staff who will slowly turn on light by light, focusing on different sections of the mosaics above, giving each piece its rightful importance. Your tour of lights has just begun. You will see over 4020 square meters of golden mosaics proving why this church has earned its name of “Golden Church”.

You and your guide will make your way over to one of the masterpieces which most people do not get to properly see during the daytime due to crowds – the Pala d’Oro, an ancient altarpiece made out of silver and gold, decorated with 1300 pearls and 1927 gem stones.

During your St Mark’s at Night Tour you will learn how the area close to the altar in Saint Mark’s basilica used to be exclusively reserved to the doge and his family and court, with their own special entrance, using a passage directly from their residence. This private area within Saint Mark’s, which is created in the shape of a cross, used to be called “the minor church”, as it looks like a church within the church. It is separated from the rest of the church that was reserved for the public, by a beautiful iconostasis. This is yet another masterpiece worth seeing, created by two brothers artists Jacobello and Pierpaolo Dalle Masegne, dating back to the late 14th century.
