Learn about how at first Marie-Antoinette was extremely loved – she was pretty, young, and much better than all the previous female models (like the scandalous mistresses of Louis XV…). But a huge problem quickly emerged when she was not able to conceive an heir – at the time, seen as the woman’s fault, though we now know that the responsibility lied in Louis XVI.

Learn how being out of the spotlight, Marie Antoinette soon became lonely and bored and was spending a lot of money whilst most people were starving to death. She was soon nicknamed “Madame Déficit” by the people. Listen to anecdotes about how frivolous spending with carriages that had to be refurbished for her high hairstyles, excess of spending in dresses and jewels. She then began demanding privacy, and her actions were again frowned upon as privacy was something unheard of for a Queen. The public hated her, the nobles started hating her too, and this actually led an unprecedented media lynching.

Suzanne will take you through Marie Antoinette’s private life and talk about a few hobbies she took up and the lover she began seeing – something forbidden for women, though most Kings had hundreds of mistresses.
