The Pietà by Michelangelo leads our thoughts to on place – the Vatican one, but this sculpture of a young Mary holding the dead body of Jesus, an incredible masterpiece carved by a 23 year old man is actually one of many throughout various cities!

Michelangelo made several Pietà – a sculptural group with Mary, the dead body of Jesus and sometimes even other figures – in his long life, but probably the most personal one is the one in Florence, now in the Cathedral Museum. When the great artist was 72, he started working on a personal work of art: a Pietà which included Mary and Jesus, but also two others rarely showed. At that time he was thinking about his death and he wanted this group of figures over his own monumental tomb! We will see together where Michelangelo portrayed himself in this masterpiece. We will find out together why he chose a specific character to depict himself. What did they have in common? At a certain point the artist will have a violent reaction to his own masterpiece.
