Your journey of the senses does not stop here. Your local guide will escort you and your semi-private group just a short walk outside the Colosseum to the opulent Domus Aurea, Nero’s Golden Palace which he strategically had built for him right in the heart of the Eternal City. Here you will understand the connection between the world’s greatest arena and the world’s most hated emperor, Nero, with virtual reality reconstructions of this palace to give you an idea of the wealth and comforts the Roman Empire possessed at its height.

Your Colosseum and Domus Aurea Tour begins just outside the Colosseum Metro Station, where you and your small group will be met by your expert LivItaly tour guide who will guide you into the Colosseum with direct access so there’s no waiting on ticket lines! You will then be given a brief intro of this massive 160-foot high amphitheater which was once the site of gladiator games, mass crucifixions and exotic animal fights. You guide will give you your very own LivItaly Virtual Reality cardboard glasses so you can enjoy 360° Virtual Reality reconstructions of the Colosseum. You will now make your way up into the seating area, where you cannot help but be inspired by history as you stand where over 50,000 Roman spectators once stood in anticipation of the games. This is the very site where one million lives were lost to battles, as crowds roared at the carnage and emperors grinned with satisfaction.

The Colosseum is undisputedly one of the greatest entertainment venues the world has ever seen, but hearing stories alone will not give you a complete grasp of leisure life and battle back then. Your VR cardboard glasses will take the story one step further with a look into the past, giving you a visual sense of what the inside of the Colosseum looked like during the games.

LIVITALY VR CARDBOARD GLASSES
One pair of LivItaly original VR cardboard glasses will be distributed and gifted to every two people on tour.

The cardboard glasses are completely optional to use while on tour, and travelers are advised to use at their own discretion due to safety concerns within the archaeological sites. In order to use the glasses, you are required to download the LivItaly app (via Apple or Android store) prior to the tour and bring the smartphone with the app on the day of the tour.

Please note: VR cardboard glasses by no means replace your tour guides efforts and descriptions and serve only as an enhancement to the tour. They are in no way, shape or form a video game, but instead offer 360-degree visual reconstructions of the architectural wonders that surround you.

YOUR NEXT STOP: NERO’S GOLDEN PALACE | DOMUS AUREA TOUR

You and your small group will now take a brief walk to the Colle Oppio Park just down the street of the Colosseum, where you will be given hard hats to wear to explore the home of one of most notorious emperors in all of Roman history – Nero’s Golden Palace. You may know the story of Nero fiddling away as Rome burnt down, but what did he do afterwards? He built himself a palace which spanned across most of habitable Rome at the time, covering a mere 200 acres. You and your small group will be seeing a few of the highlights of this extravagant home.

DOMUS AUREA VIRTUAL REALITY

By now you will have a good idea of what ancient Rome once looked like, thanks to the virtual reality simulations on the first half of your tour. Recreating history doesn’t stop there. Domus Aurea now offers its very own Augmented Reality which recreates what Nero’s Golden Palace would have looked like in all its glory!

All visitors are required to wear hard hats during the Domus Aurea Tour!

LivItaly will escort you to this active excavation site (hence the hard hats) and guests will be left in good hands with a Domus Aurea official English-speaking tour guide who specializes in either Art History or Archeology. Please note that your group size will now increase in size (up to 22 people) as per Domus Aurea excavation ground policy. Rest assured that the quality of these passionate guides remain the same.

The Domus Aurea is a testament to the wealth of ancient Rome and the extreme power that emperors once held. Emperor Nero had a home so grand built for him that included palaces, pavilions, temples, lakes and parks, that his greed may have been the very thing that led to his demise. The Domus Aurea gave young Emperor Nero, only 26 years of age at the time, a power and presence which helped make him one of the most powerful men in the world at his height.

When you book a LivItaly Small Group Tour, you are guaranteed one tour guide per group of 6 people. Please bear in mind though that in order to accommodate traveling families and friends, we do on rare occasion make the exception of adding an additional one to two guests in order not to split groups who are traveling together. On that same note, you may find yourself on tour with less than six people. As we accept bookings in multiples of six, math doesn’t always work in our favor to help accommodate individual travelers and their families when on the same tour, so we hope you understand and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
