Typically, pizza is a dish that most vegans would steer away from due to the presence of dairy. However, originating from the Napoli region in the 1700’s, pizza marinara is an excellent vegan-friendly way to enjoy one of Italy’s most famous dishes! Below is a  simple recipe for Vegans to enjoy this taste of Italy from the comfort of their own home.

Pizza Pomodoro (Marinara)

Makes: 10-12 in. pizza

Prep Time: 35 mins

Cook Time: 55 mins total

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ lb of plum ripe tomatoes or 28 ounce can of peeled ripe tomatoes
  • Approximately 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil (you may need more for drizzling as well)
  • Finely sliced garlic and dried oregano (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon of fine sea salt
  • One ball of pizza dough

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 500°F
  2. For those using fresh tomatoes: Bring about 4 quarts of water to a boil. Remove stem from the tomatoes, and place them in the water for approximately 15 seconds. Remove them and let cool. Proceed to peel the tomatoes. If you are using canned tomatoes, go directly to steps 3 and 4

  3. If you own a food mill: Cut each tomato into wedges and run them through the food mill over a medium-sized bowl. If you do not own a food mill, squish the tomatoes with your hands in a medium-sized bowl (a messy but fun way to make the sauce!)

  4.  Shape the pizza dough, and place it on a floured counter

7. Place pizza onto a hot pizza stone, and broil for 3-5 minutes (or until the edges are somewhat browned
