This 45 minute interactive webinar will give you a glimpse into the life of plague-ridden side of Ancient Rome with an overview of the urban environment, sanitary conditions and the spread of germs and disease in ancient times. Learn about the living conditions of Ancient Romans and how exactly they kept clean from germs. Amanda will give you a look at prized hygiene habits of the past such as running water from aqueducts and communal baths to keep clean. Learn about what medical practices were popular in Ancient Rome and the similarities to those of today – medical doctors, regular exercise – all part of a timeless health regime.

Learn the strengths and limitations of ancient medicine with stories of physicians performing surgery and mending bones, yet not quite capable of curing infections. Who had access to treatment and were the poor given the same medical attention as wealthy Roman families?

Understand just what diseases Ancient Romans suffered from and how exactly did they cope? How did they survive malaria, a killer contagion, and how did the humid and damp environmental conditions in Rome allow it to thrive and of course spread. Amanda will also talk about viruses, and the conditions which nurtured such epidemics throughout the empire. Every day life and industry brought the Romans into contact with animals and unsanitary practices we would balk at today. We know today that epidemics normally come from an outside source, yet the Romans lived side by side with animals and farmed them on a grand scale which brought more contact with foreign viruses.

The second century the Antonine plague known as smallpox today wiped out 20% of the Roman Empire from Egypt to England. Thanks to the imperial system of roads and waterways which took politicians, traders, soldiers and ordinary people across great distances unknowingly taking pestilence with them. Worse still, in the 3rd century the empire was hit with a more deadly plague ‘like nothing anyone had witnessed before’. The Cyprian plague believe by scholars today to be similar to Ebola has somehow been forgotten by history.
