ROME CATACOMBS NIGHT TOUR | FIRST STOP – CAPUCHIN CRYPT

Your Rome Catacombs Night Tour begins just in front of the Capuchin Crypt and Museums on the lovely Via Veneto, where you will be met by a LivItaly expert guide who will begin your journey into ancient Rome with a visit to the Capuchin Crypt which holds the bones of over 4,000 deceased Capuchin monks, which have been decoratively laid out creating an eerie atmosphere which will prepare you for your upcoming stop – the catacombs tour. As your tour of the Capuchin Crypt ends and night begins to fall, your LivItaly guide will escort you to a private chauffeured car where you will be taken to ancient catacombs for the next part of your Rome Catacombs Night Tour.

ABOUT ROME CATACOMBS NIGHT TOUR

Upon arrival at the Catacombs of Saint Agnes, your tour guide will give explain who Saint Agnes was and why numerous works of art have been dedicated to this young, Christian martyr. You will soon understand just how valuable this piece of cultural heritage is as soon as you walk into the gorgeous courtyard. The site remains an Italian treasure, dedicated to Saint Agnes, a young noble girl who refused to lose her chastity to the son of a prefect, believing that “Jesus is my only spouse”. Her Christian beliefs were not well met under the reign of Diocletian, and she was soon turned into authorities and sentenced to death by Sempronius who had her beheaded. Her bones are currently preserved in the Saint Agnes Catacombs and her skull is preserved in Saint Agnes Basilica in Piazza Navona. Saint Agnes’ veneration can be seen in countless artworks which often depict her with a lamb by her side.

Walk through the stunning courtyard and make your way down to the 3 tiers of catacombs to get a profound look at the ancient burial grounds of the past. You, your group and your guide will unite with other LivItaly tour groups and descend into the depths of the catacombs with an on site expert guide who will lead this portion of the journey. You will be led by a Saint Agnes Catacombs affiliated tour guide who will provide a full explanation of what lies below ground.

Expect an unforgettable atmosphere of evening crypts, tombs and millennium old structures. Your guide is equipped with a flashlight so you don’t get lost among the hundreds of tombs you will be passing along the way. Learn about the uniqueness of this complex structure which was abandoned for centuries, only to be rediscovered in the 16th century by a Dominican friar.

Once the Saint Agnes Catacombs guide leads you back to ground level, you will go straight into the Saint Agnes Outside the Walls Basilica, built in honor of the young martyr over the very spot where her remains lay. The basilica is part of a larger, prominent palaeo-Christian funerary complex which is also home to a mausoleum dedicated to Costanza, Emperor Constantine’s daughter. Both his daughters, Costanza and Helena’s remains are buried here, and they have been venerated with priceless 4th century mosaics, some of which depict early versions of Jesus – with long hair and a halo – as he is often still depicted today. This is a truly unique experience as you will be entirely on your own in this often crowded basilica thanks to LivItaly’s exclusive collaboration.

Your Catacombs Night Tour will end with a chauffeured drive back to your starting point in the city center.
