Learn how Rome’s fascination with this exotic ancient empire started long before Rome encountered the Ptolomeic ruler Cleopatra, and how the two controversial relationships – quite literally love affairs between Rome and Egypt – resulted in the demise of the Pharaohs and began the Roman domination of Egypt which lasted over 500 years. Top guide Amanda will talk about our perception of Cleopatra and how she has dominated our imaginations as a foreign queen who won the hearts of two eminent Roman generals, yet in the Roman mind she represented all that was dangerous about the Eastern world, autocracy, despotism, luxury and of course lust.

But is that really how the story of Cleopatra should be told? Or did the Roman writers neglect to consider how incredibly powerful this exotic queen was and more importantly what wealth she represented? Amanda will talk about the disastrous end of Antony and Cleopatra’s affair at the Battle of Actium in 31BC, after this Egyptian territory with its mineral and agricultural wealth, not to mention central trade links with Arabia and India, furnished Rome with the luxuries we think of today.

Despite Roman mistrust of the East this western society grew more and more fascinated by this conquered foreign land and Egyptomania would spread across the Empire. Pyramids appeared in the city of Rome and frescoes retelling Antony and Cleopatra’s story. Even after the fall of Rome, Rome’s love affair continued with the erection of ancient Obelisks in the 16th Century and collectors vying over ancient Egyptian sculptures. In the 18th century this fashion was revived, even today in the city of Rome that fascination lingers – and not just in the museums!
