The city boasts one of the best preserved Medieval Jewish quarters of any city in Europe, with a deep heritage which dates back to the first Jewish families moving to Girona in the mid 9th century – over 1000 years ago! The community soon grew larger and had the first synagogue was built in the 10th century, close to the former Roman temple. The Jewish Quarter of Girona, established in the 13th century is right in the heart of town and Gemma will lead you in a discussion through this neighborhood’s past, when by law Jews had to move to a number of specific designated streets. She will explain how many families lived there and what did they did for a living.

You will learn about the Kabbalah school of Girona and the medieval Jewish scholar, Sephardic rabbi, philosopher, physician, kabbalist, and biblical commentator Rabbi Moshe ben Nahman (RAMBAN), who is considered one of the most important figures in the re-establishment of the Jewish community in Jerusalem after the Crusades in the 11th century. Gemma will also walk you through the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and the trying times for this community during the second half of the 14th century, which worsened throughout the 15th. You will learn how many Jews left Girona in 1492, what happened to their homes and where they went on exile.
