The dome of Florence is internationally known for the techniques used in construction and for the genius of its architect – Filippo Brunelleschi, who built it without any foundational support in the 15th century! The engineering of this dome is what it is most known for but its decor is no less important. Sara will walk you through both the engineering feats and the paintings on the inside of the dome which has made this one of the most spectacular sites of Florence.

Sara will walk you through the paintings that adorn the dome. Visitors who look up for the first time are generally impressed by the great number of figures, colors and the enormity of the complex. With a surface of over 3600 square meters, this painting is the largest work ever created in a single pictorial commission! In fact, one single artist was not sufficient enough to finish the decoration – Giorgio Vasari started it in 1572, but he died in 1574 and was substituted by Federico Zuccari. How did these painters work at such heights? Learn what it took to paint a ceiling that is 196 feet high back in the 16th century, and just what went into the fresco technique.

This discussion will give you an idea of the meaning behind the painting, the main characters depicted, the artists involved and even the inclusion of the Medici family members themselves.
