This 45-minute webinar will focus on one of the most important parts of Venetian social culture – the spritz cocktail! Italians love to take a break at the end of the work day and see friends, share a few stories and relax over a glass of wine or a cocktail before heading back home for dinner. This custom is called an aperitivo, something similar to happy hour but not quite. The aperitivo did not start in Venice, and is no recent habit – it actually started long ago in Turin together with the invention of Vermouth. Very quickly this yummy habit spread in many other towns, especially throughout Northern Italy.

Elisa will walk you through the origins of bitter drinks, telling you some stories about the vinum hippocraticum during the Middle Ages, when alcohol was used as a medicine – a bit of a change from how we use it today. She will also talk about the modern day ‘kings of the aperitivo‘ such as Campari and Aperol. Discover when and where these two drinks were invented and what they taste like. Elisa will also tell you some fun facts about these two liquors and the interesting moments in Italian history they coincided with – a witness to the changes in society.

Campari is mainly linked to Milan and popular aperitivo time, coining the expression “Milano da bere”. Aperol is more famously linked to the region of Venice in the east, where they say “it’s spritz O’clock”.
Elisa will also tell you about other ways to make spritz, besides Campari and Aperol and how it’s done in Trieste and Verona.
