This 45 minute interactive episode will take you through Alessandro Manzoni’s famous novel, I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed), published in 1827 and considered one of the first Italian-language novels.

Whether you have read the novel or not, you will certainly understand why this is one of the most cherished books in Italy. Laura will give you a summary of what the story focuses on and talk about the story of two lower class ‘betrothed’ who are unable to marry because they are hindered by a local oppressor, the local ruler of the area where they live, on the shores of lake Como. The story takes place during the period of Spanish domination of northern Italy during the 1600s.

Among the various very involving stories in the plot of ‘the Betrothed’, Laura will focus on the detailed description of the terrible plague disease that decimated the population of Milan and northern Italy in 1630. In several parts, the novel describes the desperation of the Milanese, but at the same time their ability to survive that collective tragedy – fortunately, the protagonists Renzo and Lucia survive the plague and are later happily married. The novel is not only a master work of literature but through reading, we realize the strong parallels with what is going on in the world at the moment.
