Lining the way, with stalls spilling out into the street, are the “presepe” sellers. Presepe is the Neapolitan word for the Christmas nativity scene. With a tradition dating back to the 1700s, the locals come to this street to buy and collect, year by year, handcrafted characters and props to enrich their family nativity scene. Each of these delicately made pieces often take many hours if not days to craft. Presepe shops are open 12 months a year making if feel a little like Christmas no matter which season you visit.
Along the way, you’ll learn about the Neapolitan lucky charm, the curniciello, and discover the 3 criteria that according to tradition, are essential for unlocking the good luck inside.
Naples, like all cities across the Mediterranean, was conquered by the Romans and your guide will point out the many remains of Roman bathhouses, pagan temples and entertainment venues, that visitors often miss. Many of these ruins even have medieval or Renaissance churches built right on top! Your guide will also bring you to Piazza San Gaetano, the location where the ancient Greek agora and Roman forum used to be putting us right in the center of the ancient town.
