LivTalks presents Moulin Rouge, Unscrupulous Morals to Birth of Pop Culture with Alex live from his home in Paris! This 45-minute webinar will focus what has made the Moulin Rouge one of the most talked about cabaret sites in the world, and if it actually lives up to its hype. Alex will talk about the concept of the rejection of moral standards which embodied this cabaret scene, and explain how this doesn’t imply rejection of all morals, altogether.

Alex will walk you through how high society slowly saw its values erode, only to be substituted by a more naturalistic, freer, popular culture. But let’s start at the beginning – get an idea of Paris under the empire of Napoleon III, Haussmann urban reforms and World Fairs – and how they played into the development of the Moulin Rouge culture. Learn about entertainment in the age of liberalism: high society and “low” cultures, and the birth of stardom. You will also get a glimpse of intellectual social life – from private artist salons to public spheres and how all of this made for perfect conditions to help the Moulin Rouge not only open, but thrive and create a movement

Learn about the elements that created the Moulin Rouge – the founders and their concept of fun; the stars; and the role of sex in culture. Alex will talk about the cabaret dancers who advertised their bodies while dancing, using the concept of “sex sells”, creating a counter movement of women’s rights, with a cry towards objectification being pushed to the extreme. Listen to stories of imposed Victorian values and prominent prostitution which reveal the hypocrisies of women’s condition at the time. All of this not only sparked Manet’s triggering of modern art with Olympia, it also made its way into the mind of Freud whose reflections on contemporary issues create the science of psychology, reevaluating the role of sex in our psyche, paving the way for the “liberation of the bodies” in the 1970s.

Alex’s discussion will also touch on the birth of Modern Art and advertising – Manet’s criticism of the era’s morals, revealing the prominent taboo that came with sex; as well as Degas’ obsession with the grace of dancers and the rawness of brothels – all of this sparking conceptual undertones of Impressionism.

You will also learn about the art of advertising during the prime of Moulin Rouge with ads commissioned to the famous Toulouse Lautrec. Learn about his relationship with the dancers, how he considered himself an “outcast”, and how this rejection of identity led to a widespread application of classical humanism. Alex will also spend some time talking about how this all compares to society today.
