LivTalks presents Spanish Bullfighting: Behind the Capes with Nancy live from her home in Barcelona! This 45-minute webinar will give you a comprehensive look at bullfighting in Spain – from past to present. Learn the origins of bullfighting in Spain, dating back to 1485, with the version we know and see today is from the late 1700s when the first purpose built bullring was completed in Ronda, Spain (near Seville in the south of the country). Nancy will explain how bullfighting, from its start in Spain, was linked with the aristocratic classes and, in fact the oldest bullring (the one in Ronda) is officially called The Royal Mastery of Cavalry. The first bullfights were done on horseback and is called Rojoneo. This is still done today for special festivals.Bullfighters work in teams called Cuadrillos which consist of 4 people. This can be the matador and three men or the matador takes a break. It depends on how good the matador is and how much he gets paid per bullfight.

Nancy will explain the stages to the bullfight in Spain beginning with the Tercio de Varas – this is the first stage where there is only the bullfighter and the bull – cape, no killing sword yet, which allows the matador a chance to see how the bull reacts, how they charge, and more. The Picadores is the next part, and the most controversial of the bullfight. It involves two men on horseback who use spears to weaken the bulls neck muscles (and therefore his ability to charge well). The next stage is the Tercio de banderillas – this is where the matador’s team (cuadrilla) tries to insert banderillas (two foot long colorfully decorated poles with spikes in the end of them) in the neck of the bull. The bullfight ends with the Tercio de Muerte – the matador and the bull once again. This is the deal breaker – the matador has 15 minutes to kill the bull. In each bullfight there are typically three matadors and six bulls with another six bulls behind the scenes on reserve. If a bullfighter has done an excellent job, then he is given both ears and the tail of the bull. The crowd waves white handkerchiefs in honor of the win.

Get an idea of what is in the the bullfighting venue – every bullring has a chapel, an emergency operating room (complete with staff) and a slaughterhouse (most of the time, the meat is then given to hospitals or soup kitchens).

The discussion will also talk about the fame behind the games, with really good bullfighters having a similar prestige to rock stars and celebrities. They often go on tour during the winter months in Spain to South America. The season in Spain is from Father’s Day (19 March) until October (normally around the 12th). The president of the bullring is the Police Commissioner of that township/city. Nancy will also mention some of the more important related events such as the Running with the Bulls in Pamplona, which is internationally known, especially for their outfits and pink socks!
