For over 3000 years the Great Pyramid of Giza remained the tallest man-made structure in the world at 146.5 meters. This was still the case when Gustav Eiffel was born in 1832. Because of his mind for science, business and politics, the Eiffel Tower was 300 meters high when completed. While it held the crown for the tallest building for 42 years, all the world’s skyscrapers owe their architectural integrity to the genius behind the Eiffel Tower.

Before there was a Bill Gates, there was a visionary, educated not in computer science, but in the most cutting-edge technology of the mid 1800’s, metallurgy. Gustav Eiffel graduated from university and immediately went to work in France building bridges for the railroad, le chemin de fer, or the iron pathway. 12 years into it, he had proven his genius in engineering, chemistry of metal and physics when he had an epiphany.

“If I open my own company, there will be a worldwide demand for our iron working services.” He started Eiffel Engineering and Construction in Paris when he was just 32 years old. Sure enough, just like his predecessor who started a company called Microsoft, Gustav was right about demand. And like Bill Gates, M. Eiffel became mindbogglingly rich. This is the story of how the Eiffel Tower came to be a reflection of its amazing creator. The silhouette of the Eiffel Tower remains the most recognizable in the world.
