Our Trastevere & Jewish Rome Private Tour allows you to see and learn about a side of Rome that many do not know about. Enjoy an exploration of two of the most beautiful and historically rich neighborhoods in Rome. With your private guide you will be able to truly experience Rome on this off-the-beaten path tour.

You will hear the fascinating stories weaving the modern residents to the ancient inhabitants of these areas of Rome. Did you think Rome was just about Christianity? After this tour you will learn about the influence of both ancient Pagan religions and Judaism on the Eternal City. Your tour covers the Jewish Neighborhood (known by the Romans as the Jewish Ghetto), but also the picturesque area of Trastevere, Campo de’ Fiori, to admire one of the oldest markets in the world, and the Isola Tiberina or the island in the Tiber river.

Begin at Largo Argentina, a fascinating archeological site in the center of Rome. Amongst the ruins we will learn about ancient murders and current inhabitants. After, we will continue our neighborhood exploration through beautiful medieval alleways to see the famous open air market Campo de’ Fiori and the beautiful Renaissance building of Palazzo Farnese.

After crossing the Tiber river we will enter the neighborhood of Trastevere (Tras-across, Tevere-Tiber), and let ourselves get lost in the maze of charming, narrow cobblestone streets. From the Roman Republic up until the end of the Middle Ages, Trastevere was the center of the Jewish community. Let your private tour guide fascinate you with stories about this amazing part of the city. You are sure to enjoy the quiet peacefulness of this neighborhood during the daytime. On your own, perhaps you will want to come back in the evening when it bustles with Roman nightlife for both Italians and tourists. We will then have the opportunity to visit one of Rome’s most ancient Churches, the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, and admire its beautiful golden mosaics.

We leave this romantic neighborhood behind and cross the Tiber river on the Isola Tiberina. This island holds the secrets of Rome’s origins and great success, and now houses one of the oldest hospitals in the Italian Capital. On the other side of river, we find the Jewish Ghetto but before we reach it we will make a little detour to an ancient open air theatre, Teatro Marcello.

Once we enter the Jewish Ghetto, your private guide will show you the beautiful architecture, modest squares and the small cobblestone alleyways this spectacular ancient neighborhood offers. Today the area is a hidden treasure. But, not long ago, it was a walled community that lived under unfair conditions. We reach the heart of the neighborhood, the Great Synagogue of Rome, which we will admire it from the outside. The Synagogue is easily accessible after the tour if you wish to continue your visit inside!
