Making a day trip from Rome to Orvieto is very simple! From Termini, you can take a regional train to Orvieto! The train ride will take about one hour. From Termini you can purchase a ticket from a TrenItalia ticketing machine, if it is a regional train without assigned seats make sure to validate your ticket before boarding! When you reach Orvieto, exit the station and cross the small roundabout and enter the station marked Funicolare, from there purchase two tickets per person (1-going 1-return) and ride the cable car to the top of the hill. The cable car runs every ten minutes between 7:20am and 8:30pm during the week and between 8:00am and 8:30 pm on Sundays and holidays. Once you reach the top of the hill you can take the bus going towards Duomo to the center of the historic city center, or you can walk to the top which will take about 10-15 minutes and is a slight up hill walk! Once you reach the city center go and explore!

When you have arrived at the main square in Orvieto, go get a free map inside the information office that is located on the left side of the square. From there, you will be able to walk around the old city of Orvieto easily! Check out the stunning facade of Orvieto’s Duomo and then head inside the church and admire the amazing architecture and early renaissance paintings within the transepts of the church!

Once you have seen the magnificent Duomo, head further into town and visit some of the artisan shops! Make your way outside of the more touristy area’s and find a small place to enjoy a delicious Umbrian meal! At your meal share an amazing bottle of table wine which, Orvieto is known for! After lunch walk to the edge of old town Orvieto and enjoy the beautiful valley below!

Walking around the city you can find many other beautiful views and visit some of Orvieto’s other attractions before heading back to Rome! Make your way to St. Patrick’s well, a 175 foot deep well that was built by the Pope in the 17th century! Orvieto was an escape for the Pope when the papal state was under threat and the well would ensure that he always had enough water! This well is beautifully built and open to visitors if you wish to give it a look!
