How to adjust your travel plans

How to adjust your travel plans

Early this morning, Thursday, May 7th, a fire broke out in Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. The fire started in the kitchen of one of the airport cafés in Terminal 3. Thankfully there were no serious injuries and the terminal was safety evacuated. When situations like this arise, travelers are always reminded that traveling, although certainly exciting, is ultimately unpredictable experience. How does the event affect your travel plans and how can you adjust?

Redirected flights

Due to the fire, the airport was temporarily closed and around 200 flights were canceled and a number have been redirected to Rome’s Ciampino Airport. Additionally many roads around the airport have been closed and many trains from the city into the airport have been canceled. In unpredictable situations such as these, even seasoned travelers can find themselves feeling stressed and confused. If you happen to find yourself in a situation such as this, here are a few things that you should do to help get your trip back on track.

First, try to find somewhere with wifi so that you can check the status of your flight and keep up to date with any changes. Furthermore, don’t forget that you can always talk to your hotel and ask them to help you call your airline, or even to help you find transportation to the airport.

If you are going to be arriving to your destination late make sure to inform your hotel, hostel, or other accommodation of your late arrival so that they can prepare accordingly. Also keep in mind that typically, if you cancel within 24 hours of arrival, hotels will still charge you for your first night. However all businesses have different cancellation policies, so be sure to check your provider’s policy in to know what to expect.
