Pick-pocking and street scamming is a very common occurrence in Europe, including Rome, and though there is no reason to be afraid, be sure to be aware! Here are some tips to stay safe on your trip to the city and to avoid theft.Tips to Thwart Theft

Prepare!

    • Before you leave for your trip, make scanned copies of all of your important documents (credit cards, id, passport etc.). When you get to Rome, store them somewhere safe so that you can refer to them if something of yours is stolen.
    • Before a day of exploring the city, check your wallet. Remove any excessive amounts of cash and one card – this way if you are pick-pocketed, you’ll have some money and a card to fund you while you get everything sorted out.

Be aware of your surroundings

    • Try to carry little with you and keep your bag in front of you (it is best if it is a cross-body as well), and in crowded situations, hold your hand over the opening.
    • Don’t leave things in your back pocket!
    • Be careful in overly crowded spaces like buses and markets, be sure to know where all of your belongings are.
    • Although there is safety in numbers,  remember, pickpockets can also work in groups and even use children; watch out for people trying to distract you.
    • If you’re really worried about theft, a money belt or any other way of holding your cash close to your body is not a bad idea.

It never hurts to look like a local

    • If you look too much like a tourist, are wearing flashy jewelry or carrying a large bag, you may fall victim to theft (or an attempt). Try not to look too ostentatious.
    • Look confident. If you look confused or lost you will seem like an easier target. Know where you’re going (or at least pretend to), and walk with a sense of purpose.

As for street vendors, remember, although they may be pushy, they are not trying to hurt you, nor steal from you. If you don’t want to buy something, just say “no” firmly and use body language – shake your head and wave your hands just to be sure you get your point across. If you do want to buy something, go for it! But beware, you will be fined if you buy (not sell) counterfeit bags, although they may look nice and the prices may look even nicer, a €3,000 fine is not nice at all!

Remember, the majority of travelers have no problems with pick-pockets or scams, and as long as you stay safe you won’t have any problems either!
